Windermere, Ambleside and District Angling Association (WADAA) Splash Aerator

Windermere, Ambleside and District Angling Association (WADAA) are the largest fishing club in Cumbria and provide fishing and event opportunities across 20 venues in Cumbria and North Lancashire.

The impacts of climate change and nutrient loading puts a tremendous pressure on these aquatic environments and in recent years the club has developed a series of mechanical aeration solutions to keep the fish stocks (and other aquatic life) healthy - supporting systems all the way up from the bottom of the food chain. Many of the venues have no mains power supply, which adds a further complication for power-hungry, moving water systems.

Following generous BWECT support, the club has been able to design, develop and build a state-of-the-art solar powered 'splash' aeration system. This is fully remotely operated, with real-time condition feedback. It is truly cutting edge and would not have been possible without the award.

The system safeguards oxygen levels in the water, providing a healthy environment, as well as outdoor recreational activity, for many thousands of people from all demographics and the club has seen angling numbers rise significantly in recent years.

Furness Future Leaders

Furness Future Leaders

BWECT funded Furness Future Leaders, a project aimed at establishing a permanent summer school and follow-up mentoring programme to boost skills for young people, with a donation of £2000.

The Furness Future Leaders’ Academy was set in motion in 2015 by Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock, with the intention of providing young people with the leadership abilities that will be needed to steer the booming local economy of tomorrow.

Mr Woodcock MP said "Tackling the gap in skills and ambition is a serious challenge if we are to ensure young Furness people can benefit from the high-tech economy that is emerging here – this academy can really help with that, and I’m so pleased that local employers and schools have come onboard so enthusiastically."
