Windermere, Ambleside and District Angling Association (WADAA) Splash Aerator

Windermere, Ambleside and District Angling Association (WADAA) are the largest fishing club in Cumbria and provide fishing and event opportunities across 20 venues in Cumbria and North Lancashire.

The impacts of climate change and nutrient loading puts a tremendous pressure on these aquatic environments and in recent years the club has developed a series of mechanical aeration solutions to keep the fish stocks (and other aquatic life) healthy – supporting systems all the way up from the bottom of the food chain. Many of the venues have no mains power supply, which adds a further complication for power-hungry, moving water systems.

Following generous BWECT support, the club has been able to design, develop and build a state-of-the-art solar powered ‘splash’ aeration system. This is fully remotely operated, with real-time condition feedback. It is truly cutting edge and would not have been possible without the award.

The system safeguards oxygen levels in the water, providing a healthy environment, as well as outdoor recreational activity, for many thousands of people from all demographics and the club has seen angling numbers rise significantly in recent years.
